What is the Therapeutic Order?

Have you ever felt like you’re doing everything right? Eating well, taking the supplements, trying to look after yourself

I see this all the time.

And it’s not because you’re doing anything wrong. It’s often because we’re not starting in the right place.

In naturopathic medicine, we use something called the Therapeutic Order - a framework that guides how we support the body back to health.

And at its core, it’s actually very simple.

We don’t start with the most advanced treatment. We don’t jump straight to complex protocols. We start with the foundations.

So, what is the Therapeutic Order?

The Therapeutic Order is a step-by-step approach to healing that works with your body, not against it.

It’s based on a few key principles:

  • Support the body’s natural ability to heal

  • Use the least invasive options first

  • Address the root cause, not just symptoms

  • Only move to stronger interventions when needed

It’s a gentle, logical, and deeply respectful way of approaching health.

But this is the part I care about most - because it’s the part that changes everything.

Healing starts with your foundations

Before we look at supplements, testing, or detailed protocols, we need to ask:

Are the basics actually supporting you?

Because your body can’t truly thrive, no matter how “perfect” your protocol is, if the foundations aren’t in place.

Your foundations of health are the things you do every single day:

  • how you eat

  • how you sleep

  • how you respond to stress

  • how you move your body

  • your connection to sunlight, nature, and your environment

These might seem simple… but they are powerful.

This isn’t the “extra” work you do when you have time. This is the groundwork your body depends on.

When these are out of balance, your body is constantly trying to catch up.

When they’re supported, your body finally has the space to heal.

What do the foundations actually include?

When I talk about the foundations of health, I’m referring to:

  • Nutrition → whole, nourishing foods that support your gut, brain, and energy

  • Sleep → deep, restorative rest where real repair happens

  • Stress & nervous system support → helping your body feel safe, not constantly switched “on”

  • Movement → in a way that energises you, not depletes you

  • Sunlight & nature → supporting circadian rhythm, mood, and immune health

  • Hydration & clean air → essential for every cellular process

  • Reducing toxic load → minimising everyday exposures that can disrupt hormones and overwhelm the body

These aren’t small things.
They are the foundation that everything else is built on.

The rest of the Therapeutic Order (in simple terms)

Once your foundations are in place, you can layer in more targeted support if needed:

  • Stimulate the body’s healing response
    (e.g. herbal medicine, acupuncture, hydrotherapy)

  • Strengthen weakened systems
    (like gut health, hormones, or the nervous system)

  • Support structural balance
    (alignment, posture, movement)

  • Use targeted natural therapies
    (when there’s a clear imbalance or pathology)

  • And when necessary
    pharmaceuticals or surgery absolutely have a place

But all of these work so much better when your foundations are already supporting you.

Why this matters so much

One of the most common patterns I’ve noticed is people doing all the right things, taking high-quality supplements, following detailed protocols,
but still not getting the results they hoped for.

And often, it comes back to this:

The foundations weren’t fully supported.

You can’t out-supplement poor sleep.
You can’t override chronic stress with the “perfect” protocol.
And your body can’t heal optimally if it doesn’t feel safe, nourished, and rested.

When you support your foundations, everything else starts to work better.

Your energy improves.
Your resilience increases.
Your body becomes more responsive to treatment.

Where to start
